Moses Could Have Taken The Easy Way Out

As humans, we lean towards the easy but that’s not always what we are called to do.

Everybody has a purpose, a reason for being on this earth. One person described life as being composed of two critical moments…

  1. The day we were born
  2. The day we figure out what we were made to do

In case you are not familiar with his story, here are a few highlights about Moses.

  • He was born a slave in a people group (Jews) that had been in slavery for about 400 years.
  • The government at the time – headed by a Pharaoh – was scared that the slaves were becoming too strong, so he ordered that all the male babies be killed
  • Moses was hidden by his mom to avoid this; finally she could hide him no longer and put him in a basket hoping that Pharaoh’s daughter would rescue him
  • Moses is “adopted” by the daughter and is brought up in the palace, receiving all the instruction, schooling, and benefits of living in the palace
  • At the age of 40, he murders an Egyptian who was mistreating a Jew. When he is found out, he flees from prosecution.
  • In the meantime, he starts a family and is a shepherd.
  • At the age of 80, God calls him to lead his people out of slavery.

Moses could have taken the easy way out. A life in the palace was luxurious compared to that of a slave. A life in the palace was comfortable compared to a life as a shepherd. He probably could have had his pick of Egyptian women as a wife had he not murdered an Egyptian. But Moses followed the call of God, even though it was difficult. At the age of 80 – when most people are retired – he spent his time leading his people to the Promised Land. And it took 40 years! This was no easy feat!

What is God calling you to do? Are you afraid of what the difficulty might be? Did Martin Luther King have fear? Winston Churchhill? Nelson Mandela? I’m glad none of these men chose the easy path.
